Human Trafficking - It's in Our Backyard
Panel discussion: "Forced Labour & Human Trafficking: The Return of the Old Scourge of Slavery"
There are 23-27 million slaves worldwide today. There are more slaves now than at any other time in history. Most people presume that slavery disappeared in the US with the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of trans-Atlantic slave trade. Actually, slavery never ended in the US and is second only to the illegal drug trade as a source of illicit income.
What is the state of slavery today and what is being done to combat this ancient scourge? Come and listen to experts lead by Professor Claude d'Estrée, M.T.S., J.D.
Prof. Claude d'Estrée is the Director of both the Human Trafficking Clinic (HTC) and the Center on Rights Development (CORD). He is the Director of the Human Rights Degree Program at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies as well as the Buddhist Chaplain at the University of Denver. He also serves as a Special Rapporteur for UN.GIFT (United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking).
The University of Denver's Josef Korbel School offers the only two-year graduate level training program in the U.S. on forced and bonded labour, human trafficking, contemporary slavery and international migration issues. Begun in 2002 as the Task Force on Modern Slavery & Human Trafficking, in 2008 it became the Human Trafficking Clinic dedicated to excellence in research and writing in partnership with international organizations (IO's), non-governmental organizations (NGO's), governmental agencies, and the private sector.
Prof. d'Estrée is a graduate of Harvard Divinity School, Northeastern University Law School and the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School. Before coming to DU in 2002 he was with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington, DC. His wife, Tamra Pearson d'Estrée, is the Henry R. Luce Professor of Conflict Resolution and the Director of the Conflict Resolution Institute Center on Research and Practice at DU.

co-hosted by BoldeReach and City Club
Population Growth: The Forgotten Dilemma
Tuesday May 24, 7-9 pm
City Club
885 Arapahoe Avenue, Boulder, CO 80302
The documentary film "Mother: Caring Our Way Out of the Population Dilemma" ends the 40-year absence of public discourse on population control. Despite public outcry demanding solutions for our most pressing environmental, humanitarian and social crises; the need for population control, which is at the core of these problems, remains unspoken. Grounded in the theories of social scientist Riane Eisler, the film strives not to blame but to educate, to highlight a different path for humanity. Overpopulation is merely a symptom of an even larger problem - a "domination system" that has glorified the domination of man over nature, man over child and man over woman. We must change our conquering mindset into a nurturing one.
This 55 minute film features biologist Paul Ehrlich, author of “The Population Bomb;" economist Mathis Wackernagel, the creator of the ground-breaking Footprint Network; Malcolm Potts, a pioneer in human reproductive health.
The film will be followed by a discussion lead by Joellen Raderstorf, Co-founder and Board Chair of Mothers Acting Up and Beth Osnes, Co-founder of Mothers Acting Up and a professor of theatre at the University of Colorado.

Please join us to hear
Janet Shikles, Health Care Expert
addressing Health Care in the US—Are Women and Children Forgotten?
BoldeReach lives its mission “to aid and empower women and children in extreme need”. Our focus is overseas, but we can not lose sight of what is or may be happening in our own country. US heath care policy is complex, frequently arcane with an incomprehensible tangle of rules and delivery systems.
Please join us to hear Janet Shikles, health care expert, speak clearly and coherently on the future of health care for women and children in the US. Janet: “In all my years in health care I’ve never seen such an attack on women and children”.
Will our legacy to the generations of women who follow us be that we allowed them again to be denied basic human services? Current congressional proposals include significant impact/change or elimination of all funding for planned parenthood, breast and cervical cancer screening, the WIC programs and much more.
------------------------------
Janet Shikles has extensive experience working to improve public health both in the US and abroad. She developed a strategy to improve women’s health in the US and working with the World Bank and the Chinese government she helped design and test a pilot health care system for both Chinese urban and rural poor. She has been a frequent witness at Congressional Hearings and issued several hundred reports a year to the Congress.
Janet has a BA cum laude from the University of Redlands, an MA in political science from George Washington University, and an MSW in planning from Howard University.

"Education for women and girls is the first step towards empowerment. When these girls are given the tools not just to read and write, but to critically think, to understand political and social issues that affect them, then have the ability to be heard, to be respected, and to become the catalysts for change within their own country. This will do more for women's rights, violence against women and children, and economic growth than anything else we can do."
